Solar Power Backup System

BE CREATIVE:

LET’S BUILD OUR PROJECT, THIS IS THE TIME TO HARNESS SOLAR ENERGY::

Project:- TO BUILD SOLAR BASED POWER BACK UP SYSTEM.

Materials Required(CLICK HERE FOR PRODUCT LINKS):

Solar Panel

Charge Controller

Inverter

Battery

Pre-Procedure:

1.    Choosing a solar panel: As per my research and analysis, multi junction solar panels are best suited for all purposes having much high efficiency, but these are costly and sometimes unavailable. Thin film solar panel is another choice but they relatively have low efficiency and high costs, they are best suited for projects where we need flexibility. Thus, if financial conditions do not allow we should use simple mono crystalline silicon solar panel.

2.    Micro Controller: This can be either a standalone device of an integrated circuit system which regulates the flow of current from various components of the system. In brief it is to prevent the current from damaging the units of the systems mainly batteries as it ensures not excess charge gets into a battery or not all the charge in the battery is drained. We do not need any advance type Micro controller and for sake of simplicity, we use pwm or a series controller which are pocket friendly and fit for our usage.

3.    Battery: For battery we use Li-ion or Li-po battery as these are have high energy density, though being little costly these will store much energy in small volume. You can consider using a lead acid battery or Ni-metal hydride if you lack finance, FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE AN INVERTER AND A BATTERY YOU ARE READY TO GO.

4.    Inverter: At last an inverter would be used to convert dc power from battery to ac to suits your needs. The inverter power should be based on the usage and load that you would run on solar energy. A 1KW inverter would be preferable to support a good  back up load.

Proceedure:

1.    Installing solar panel: A solar panel must installed at a place which receive adequate amount of sunlight. Often open areas are preferred, Rooftop is also better place but not at much inclination solar panel should be installed so that it remains for all day visible to suns path. The inclination depends on the longitude and latitude of the region, if installed at the optimal orientation it would increase the illumination time by a good amount and also the efficiency.

2.    Electrical wiring: To save time and make the things less fuzzy its best to plan the wiring first and then connect all the equipment according to convenience. During this process try to minimize any space loss. Here you will decide the switches and other load that would run on the inverter, be sure not to overload.

3.    Connections: You will have to prepare connectors that would be compatible with your solar panel. Most probably it would be MC3 or MC4 type for any type you can see tutorial videos here. Also connect all wires with inverter and battery through the charge controller. Remember that both battery and inverter should have equal voltage to function and the charge controller should have a range that supports the same voltage.

4.    Earthing: After making all connections be sure to check for grounds to prevent any charge leaks and damage.

5.    Power supply: You should plug in the inverter to the outlet socket and you are ready to go…. !
